Question Problem installing Audacious 2.1 from source

I am trying to install Audacious 2.1 from source. I downloaded 'audacious-2.1.tgz', unpacked and configured. The config summary looks like this:
Code:
Configuration:

  Install path:                           /usr/local
  Use one plugin dir:
  Allow user plugin dir:                  yes

  Automatic character code detection:     yes
  Sample rate conversion:                 no
  D-Bus support:                          yes
  Session management (eggsm)              yes
  XSPF playlists                          yes

  SSE2:                                   yes
  AltiVec:                                no
After running 'make', I ran 'make install' as root. Everything went fine.

Then I downloaded 'audacious-plugins-2.1.tgz'. When I run the configure script, I get this error:
Code:
...
checking for AUDACIOUS... no
configure: error: Cannot find Audacious 2.1 or later, have you installed audacious yet?
However, Audacious 2.1 is installed:
Code:
$ which audacious2
/usr/local/bin/audacious2

$ audacious2 --version
Audacious 2.1.0 [UNSUPPORTED VERSION]
Has anyone had this problem?

I know I can install using my distro's package manager, but I really want the latest version.

Since you have installed the program in /usr/local, you should set the following 2 env. variables prior running the ./configure script for the plugins
Code:
export PKG_CONFIG_PATH=/usr/local/lib/pkgconfig:$PKG_CONFIG_PATH
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH
