Problem in installing vlc player

Hi friends,
I am a new user of linux. i have installed slackware 11.0.
And tried to install vlc media player 0.8.6 using tar file, but failed to do so....
i got following errors on screen

cann't find ffmpeg/avcodec.h header file

Can anyone of you help me out friends.

Well the error means that you are missing the above stated... So I would assume you need to install the "ffmpeg" slackware package.
