Problem Getting My internet to work! Wired Networking Wire is plugged in!
Hi. I recently posted a few topics about Fedora not working with My Nvidia Graphics Card. I had to install in text mode so I believe that forces me to install only with the bare minimum of the packages that the fedora disc actually has on it. So perhaps something didn't get installed for my networking abilities.
I am using Fedora 8 and When I boot up and goes through the checking process at startup (not sure what that is called, its just a black screen with white text and green [OK]'s or Red [Failed]'s. The only [Failed] I receive on that screen has to do with my network. It says I should check the cable. Well the cable is plugged into both the back of the computer and the back of my router. I also did that script "ifup" and it said that I needed to check my cable as well. I have tried with the cable plugged into both ports on the motherboard and still no success. From previous experience with knoppix, and Damn Small Linux I have never had a problem getting a wired connection to work. They sort of tend to just work on their own with no configuration needed. I am using a ASUS A8N-SLI deluxe I believe,It could be the premium not the delux, motherboard. What's going on here?

Hi.
I really don't know what's causing your problem, but just to hopefully be of _some_ help: Have you tried running "lspci" and checked if you network card shows up there? I mean: If you're sure everything is properly connected you could check if the kernel recoginized the NIC or not.
Regards,
kenneho

I did lspci and I got a list of devices.
up in the middle of the list is says:
00:0a.0 Bridge: nVidia Corporation CK804 Ethernet Controller (rev a3)
and down at the very bottom of the list it has this:
05:0c.0 Ethernet controller: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88E8001 Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 13)
I don't really know too much about linux so I have no Idea what that means. My NIC card is an onboard NIC on the motherboard. Perhaps I need to install drivers for the NIC? As long as linux ones exist. Any other thoughts?

The next step is to make sure you are using the right kernel module for your Ethernet cards. lsmod will provide a list of loaded modules and an online search should tell you what module to use for those Ethernet controllers. There is also the possibility of physical hardware failure i.e the cable is bad or the port on the router is bad. Check those too if you have not.

hi phoenixtwo1987 so you do have a gui know and a working 3d card .
as to getting the cable connection working .I am assuming you have not done a full system update For fedora 8 ( it will hit end of life next month) it should be about 750 to 1500 packages about 2 gigs .
also i am assuming you are using gnome . what services are on that is did you turn any of them off
see:"Services in Fedora 8"
http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mjm-services-f8.html
NetworkManager may need to be on and Network may need to be off. but both can NOT be on at the same time .
