Problem generating a working makefile from configure:

I'm new to GNU autotools and can't get configure to produce a working Makefile - it outputs a file called "Makefile" allright but the syntax of this looks very like In other words I don't think configure has filled in the variables properly...

Any ideas why this might be happening?
