problem during disk partition at a toshiba laptop
 

I tried to install suse 10.2 in my new toshiba laptop that came with windows vista and I got the following error:
Failure occurred during following action
Creating partition /dev/sd5
System error code was -1008

I could not go beyond that (after pressing OK on that screen I just got something like a fatal error occured).
How can I solve this? Note that I installed suse 10.2 from
those cds (which I bought from the source) without problem
in a dell desktop.

Need more info.

Were you trying to resize the original partition structures and filesystem on the hard drive--or were you nuking Vista(tm).
Is this one of the machines with a recovery partition? I can never keep them all straight.
Recovery partitions are usually so full as to not be able to be resized.
With the Windows Vista partition; what file system is it? Is it the new filesystem specific to Vista? Or is it NTFS?

If you are trying to resize the "C:\" partition:
Did you strip it of un-used and unnecessary installed programs--after making sure that those programs were going to be worthless BEFORE REMOVING THEM?

After removing all of the "dreck" and all of the temporary files, and cleaning up the drive as best you could--did you defrag it over and over until you were ready to scream?

Did you turn off virtual memory while you were defragging?

Did you make an Image of the drive in case something BAD happens?

Or boot a BartPE or similar Utility CD and defrag with that?

Need more info; Miss Cleo is out of business, and I don't know all of the different error codes.

Before attempting to resize the Windows Vista Partition?

I have not done any of those things you mentioned above. I just accepted the partition that suse 10.2
suggested.
I am going to bring my computer to a group of people (CABAL) in the San Francisco Bay Area to install linux in it, since I do not
think I can do it myself (although I sucessfully did in a couple of desktops).

Hi, I'm completely new to this - I got what looks to be the same error attempting to install SUSE 10.2 on a Thinkpad 600E. It has a single new 60GB drive with XP newly installed on a 40GB partition. I'm installing from the iso CD images.

SUSE install offered me the following partition automatically, which I accepted:
. Create swap partion /dev/hda5 (807.9 MB)
. Create root partition /dev/hda6 (6.6 GB) with ext3
. Creat partition /dev/hda7 (9.4 GB) for /home with ext3
. Set mount point of /dev/hda1 to /windows/C

When I accepted this I quickly got the following error then the install aborts:

I tried this a couple of times with the same results.

I was curious about the references hda5, hda6, hda7, no mention of hda2, hda3, hda4. I read in other threads that primary partions we numbered 1 through 4, that one of these could be an extended partitions and that other partitions would be installed on the extended partition. I probably haven't understood this properly, but looked to find a way of changing the references. I selected to change the partitioning, then specifically directed SUSE to use only the 16.8 GB unused space. SUSE then proposed the following:

. Delete partition /dev/hda2 (16.8 GB)
. Creat extended partition /dev/hda2 (16.8 GB)
. Create swap partion /dev/hda5 (807.9 MB)
. Create root partition /dev/hda6 (6.6 GB) with ext3
. Creat partition /dev/hda7 (9.4 GB) for /home with ext3
. Set mount point of /dev/hda1 to /windows/C

The first line was red, which made me slightly nervous, however I accepted this and the installation proceeded without this error. The installation is proceeding as I write this, so I will not claim victory yet...

When I first installed XP I did create two partitions, although I only formatted the 40GB partition. I subsequently deleted the second partition in XP.

I wonder if this is a bug with the install?
