problem compiling new kernel

I'm using RHEL 3.0 currently with 2.4.32 kernel.
I want to compile 2.6.15.6
When I start make bzImage I get
/usr/src/linux/scripts/gen_initramfs_list.sh: Cannot open 'n'
make[1]: *** [usr/initramfs_list] Error 1
make: *** [usr] Error 2
Any ideas?

is there any particular reason that you want to update the kernel? i would suggest using one of red-hats kernels, they are quite different from the one that you have downloaded from kernel.org, i take it that its the vanilla sources kernel? (basic kernel)

Originally I was with red hat kernel 2.4.21
I upgraded it successfully with 2.4.32 downloaded from kernel.org
So I don't think this is the problem.

Caution: Upgrading from 2.4 to 2.6 is not just a kernel update. You must to update several key components too.
Do not update only the kernel from 2.4 to 2.6. You will break the system. The usb system, the hardware abstraction layer (HAL), just to metion a few, are different, and need to be upgraded too.

If you really want to run a 2.6 kernel, upgrade ALL the system to RHEL 4.0.

Once you are running RHEL4, should be easier to upgrade to a new 2.6.x kernel.

regards,

PS: RH kernels are optimized and has has several features the stock kernel has not, like security patches, and new features only seen in the development versions. My advice is stick with RH kernels.
