Problem compiling crystal space

Running ./configure there are no errors.
I then type "make all" to make everything.

I get this error message when it comes to compiling the Alternate Windowing System plug-in

/usr//bin/ld: out/UNIX/X86/optimize/av3dtxt.o: relocation R_X86_64_32S can not be used when making a shared object; recompile with -fPIC
out/UNIX/X86/optimize/av3dtxt.o: could not read symbols: Bad value
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make[1]: *** [] Error 1
make: *** [aws] Error 2

my question is how do I compile it with the -fPIC option like it says?
