Problem cloning a RAID 1 drive with Clonezilla

Hello --

We are attempting to clone one of our workstation's RAID 1 drive with the Clonezilla 2.5.2 release.

The system in question is a Dell Precision Tower 3620 with an on-board RAID hardware RAID controller. When I booted off the Clonezilla medium, and got to the GRUB page, I hit the <TAB> key to bring up the command line, and I added the following syntax:

Quote:
dmraid=false
I navigated through the various menus, and I attempted to first use SSH as the destination for the image, and then I tried using a locally attached disk. When I selected the source drive, I first tried one that referenced the mirror, and then I selected one of the mirrored drives.

All attempts resulted in Clonezilla failing with an error message indicating the partition type was not recognized.

Has anyone found a workaround for this issue? If further information is needed please let me know. Thanks.

It is not clear if you have RAID1 by hardware or by linux software.

If it is mirrored by hardware, then just pull out one of disks and enter it single to second station. Add another (empty) disk after successful boot. Add second empty disk to first server instead of taken out disk.

In second case, it is depend on how you've configured mdraid.

Actually it is neither. Cheap onboard RAID controllers are what is known as fakeRAID, BIOS RAID, or HostRAID. The Linux dmraid driver provides support for BIOS RAID.

Still not understand.
Pls: "cat /proc/partitions", "fdisk -l", "cat /proc/mdstat", "df -hP", "pvs", "lvs"

Then perhaps you shouldn't be responding to this thread at all as you don't know what dmraid BIOS RAID is and how it differs from Linux software RAID mdraid. dmraid and mdraid are very different.

Look at man dmraid to start.

/proc/mdstat is for Linux mdraid which they are not using.

For dmraid they would use dmraid -s and dmraid -r.

pvs and lvs are only if they have lvm on top of the dmraid.

I did a quick search and it appears that Clonezilla does not support software RAID partitions. There were many posts from the last few years. You should just use rsync to copy data.

Please keep replies relevant to the original post. (edited to be more clear) This means all members should try to keep replies that address the OP's queston.

We do need to know what drive controller is used. If the OP is correct that the controller is really hardware then it should be transparent to Clonezilla unless you wish to try to clone it disk by disk via dd. Cloning a raid of still unknown raid level may require some special means.

Having just seen a couple of articles voleg has published I think s?he is well qualified to contribute.

We should all wait for hard data from the OP.

I think the Clonezilla CD is lacking a driver for the raid controller.

"Clonezilla CD is lacking a driver for the raid controller."

Very likely.
