Printing Problems

Hi

I am having a few network printing problems.

My first problem is with Open Office, when I go to a print a text document, it seems to print 1/2 a page then spit the paper out then sent a weird command to my printer which seems to send it into manual feed mode, when I reset the printer it prints 1 page of strange graphics.

My other problem concerns Mozilla, where it will not even list the printer I have setup. It Lists a Postscript printer, but no sign of my HP printer....

I'll try and list as much detail as I can about my setup.

I'm using Fedora Core 2, KDE 3.2.3
Open Office 1.1.1
The Printer is attached to a Windows machine and setup as Windows Network SMB.
The printer is a HP 870cxi and this is selected in the driver setup.
Mozila 1.7.

Can any one help?

thanks

Lee

mozilla requires a "print command" with mozilla open go to file>print this should list poscript/default, there should be a properties button to the right of that, choose that button, you should see a print command option with a text box next to it, in that box put your print command, the variables here are infinte, so i can't tell you what command goes there. only you know your print comand, via how you set the printer up.

open office also has it's own printer admin program that you'll need to set up. choose printer administration, then you may need to add a printer or reconfigure the printer with the proper commands.

hope this helps.
good luck.

Thanks for that, but just one "Noob" question, how do I find out what command to put in the text box. I set the printer up via a GUI setup program under the start maneu > system > printer.

if you are using kde as your profile suggests, try

kprinter

good luck.

LeeHA 07-24-2004 05:41 AM

Well yep I can load Kprinter (yep I do use KDE).

But this doesn't give me any "commands" to us.

The really annoying thing is that it will print test pages fine. So why can't I get a simple Word document to print properly!?

Could not find the printer admin for open office, the only printer options it seems to have is in the Options window which just sets up page sizes.

Sorry I'm still learning linux. :newbie: so if you could be more detailed it would help.

Thanks.

try kprinter as the command. i.e. in the actual text window next to command type in kprinter. see post #2 for directions to the command window. hope thats cllear enough. post if back you don't understand.
good luck.

Hi, ya I opened a terminal window as root and typed kprinter and it just brought up the GUI like before and I am unable to find any "commands" in it.

Peacedog 07-24-2004 03:33 PM

look at post #2 it gives directions where the command

kprinter

actually goes. you have to enter the command in the propgrams print command window. post # 2 should get you there.
good look.

I'm sorry I must be missing something really obvious here, I can't get a print command, there are non listed, I setup my printer via a GUI so I never saw any commands, nor do I know how to find them, maybe they're in a setup file? I know you can't give me my printer commands by maybe you could give me the syntax to look for? What should I be seeing?

I notice your profile says your using slackware maybe this is more "verbose" or you setup everything via a command line with that but Fedore is more GUI (one of the reason's I chose it!)..

for mozilla open go to file>print this should list poscript/default, there should be a properties button to the right of that, choose that button, you should see a print command option with a text box next to it, in that box type kprinter. the setup for open office is similar. once you get mozilla going, you should be able to get open office going.
good luck.

oh dear, what an Idiot I look now, sorry I didn't read your instructions correctly.

Ok so now I'm finally sorting that out, I can get Mozilla to print :)

Ok but, sorry there is always a but, no option like this seems to exist in Open Office. Ok I printed off another document and that seemed to print fine, but the origianal doc I was trying to print is still giving me errors. So my guess is that there is something odd with this particular doc, but can't see what, the fonts are the same there are no odd chars what could it be doing to upset the printer?

Just tried to cut and paste the contents to a new doc but alas no joy. in fact this made the problem worse as it will now only print up to the first paragraph then go "funny".

Any idea what could be causing this?

Peacedog 07-25-2004 06:17 PM

glad you found it, no need to feel like an idiot, i overlook things all the time. i don't have open office installed on the box i'm posting from, my main workstation recently died, so i'm posting from a freebsd machine on my lan. i will get open office installed soon, as i need it, but will be posting from this machine until my new equipment comes in. looking at oo on one of my windows machines is not helpful as the print admin tool really doesn't exist. so i can't give you a step by step how to add that print command, i assure it's there though. about this document that will not print, is it a native open office doc, or something else, it may be a formating problem.

LeeHA 07-26-2004 03:45 AM

Hi,

Yes the doc was written in Open Office, its just a straight forward letter. The other doc that printed ok was a list though, I'm begining to wonder whether its a problem with returns being corrupted or something?

The only thing I can find in OO for the printer options, if the file > print dialog which just displays the HP printer with a properties button, clicking on the button however does nohting.

Really appricate the time and effort you have put in for me, thanks a lot.

Peacedog 07-26-2004 06:42 AM

glad to help. from your start menu or kmenu, you should have something under the open office entry that says printer administration, w/out having it installed thats about all i've got from memory. about the doc, have you tried a similar doc, to confirm the corrupted returns suspicion?

LeeHA 07-30-2004 05:40 PM

Hi

I had a look in my kmen, I went to office and all I have is
Address Manager
Kontact
Korganiser
Office Calc
Office Draw
Office Impress
Office Math
Office Writer
No printer admin.

I cut and pasted the document into Kedit and this has printed fine.

As I was running out of ideas, I suddenly thought about changing the font, so I pickedd something I knew the printer would be ok with (like Times, it was on Bitstrem Vera Sans whatever that is) and hey presto is printed, now to find out hwo to make this the default font and I think I would have solved the problem, I guess there is only some fonts my printer can cope with.

Again Thanks one again for your time.

Lee
