printing problem: cups 1.1 pstops filter broken?

Hello, I have a cups-related problem.
I often print booklets with openoffice, printing 2 pages per sheet. Alas, even if GtkLP (v.0.9s) has an option for it, if I select multiple pages per sheet I get the printing job aborted before actually initializing the printer.
I suppose the problem is in the pstops filter, which is supposed to reaassemble pages.
The only workaround I found is printing to file and then using the /usr/bin/pstops command from gstools package.

Can anybody give me a hint?
Thank you.
