printing pdfs

I'm having probelms printing downloaded pdfs from any of the pdf viewers. They all want to print to file as postscript files. I have a cups installed network printer, but whenever I run

lpr /tmp/myfile.ps

from the command line ( I can't think of any other way to send it ), cups just reports it as an aborted job.

Any ideas anyone?

print command?

When I look at either acroread or xpdf, and I think even ghostview, I get the option of "print command"...and I normally just enter lpr filename or lpr -P printer filemname if there's more than one printer.
