Printing from XP to FC6

I have two computers connected via a router. One is a dedicated FedoraCore6 and the other an FC8/XP dual boot. I've set up a Samba share on both FC's. I'm able to see each computers from the other even when XP is mounted. However, I can't seem to get XP to print to an HP PhotoSmart1000 that is connected to the FC6 machine. XP sees itself as "PR2860a". It also sees the FC6 on the (Microsoft Network)Network although not the printer.

192.168.0.102 is the dual boot machine and I placed the following lines in both Hosts and Hosts Allow of the FC6 machine:
"All:192.168.0.102 PR2860a PR2860a".

I've even # the:
"#192.168.0.102 philsfc8.net philsfc8"
which of course when un-#'ed enabled FC8 to print to the FC6 printer.

I'm not sure what I'm missing. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for help. phil

both fedora 6 and 8 are WAY out of date and are UNSUPPORTED

Please update to a SUPPORTED version of Fedora . Fedora 11 is the current and fedora 12 will be out in about a month.

I like FC6 for many reasons mainly that I have dvd:rip v0.97.7 installd and working very well. I tried to get it up and running on FC8 but ran into too many programs and file that had to be located and installed. I've got FC11 running too but, decided that I'm too old and don't know how much longer I've got to live to fight with it to get dvd:rip running.

I did get XP to print to FC6 by clicking on FC6 in XP 'install printer wizzard' window. My printer appeared but XP wanted to install a driver (XP has the driver and will print to the printer if it's plugged into LP1). XP also refused to see the driver on my HP PhotoSmart install disk. So I selected the closest one from the available driver database (HP DeskJet) and wouldn't you know it works reasonably well. phil

If you were willing to upgrade to a current distribution, I would be able to tell you how to access your Linux printers from XP, But you won't so I can't. Sorry.

lutusp:

I appreciate your desire to drag me into the modern world. However, were Fedora not so skittish about copyright, etc. I'd be glad to join. Because of Fedora's fears it has pretty much neutered its OS. If Fedora would make it easy to acquire the needed files and programs...but I guess I waste my time with these arguments.

Of course you and the others might be gracious enough to point me to an appropriate fourm that could help me. Thanks. phil

You should be able to download the most recent XP driver from HP's support website.
I assume that samba and cups is configured and running and that FC6 is able to print successfully.
The XP add printer wizard will let you select an already installed local driver for a remote printer.
