Printing from gthumb - too dark!

I'm printing photos lately with gthumb and an HP 510 Photosmart, one of those little portable printers that does only 4x6". The prints all come out too dark. I have to edit with the gimp every single one first and brighten quite a bit to get acceptable quality. So I need either a fix for this or an image viewer that can do a better job of printing the correct brightness. Thanks in advance.

Well not to sound rude but if I'm going to convert to ps/pdf I might as well keep using the gimp to brighten.

What do you mean?

Print out photos most of times are always darker than what we see from our monitor.

Some of the reasons are:
1. LED/LCD backlight lights up the photos in the monitor.
2. And perhaps your monitor is not calibrated to the printer profile?

There are several monitor calibration software available, usually for those professional photographers or designers.

Some people even go for specialized monitor (e.g EIZO ColorEdge CG241W )

Cheers... :)

@ RJwen: No, in one photo my lazy boy chair is clearly visible but not in the print. Thanks for your reply.
