For some reason that I cannot identify, my system is not polling the printer when it reboots with the result that when I try to add a local printer to the parallel port using the printtool, system says 'not detected' on all three of the available lp0, lp1, lp2 and I am unable to go any further.
The printer is printing fine under W95 but under Linux no luck!
Any ideas as to what is happening? Shall be grateful for any help.

How did you compile the printer support in the kernel. Did you compile it as a module or directly into the kernel? If you compiled it as a module make sure that module is installed. I'm sure it would have been compiled as lp.o. So you would issue the command modprobe lp.o to add this module support to your environment.
