Hi, everyone. I am running Ubuntu 11.10 64-bit and am trying to install drivers for a Brother MFC-J410W printer. The drivers are only 32-bit. When using the software center, it says "Wrong architecture 'i386'". I click install anyway, and it does nothing. Using the terminal, I try " sudo dpkg -i --force-architecture mfcj410wlpr-1.1.1-1.i386.deb".
The output is:
Code:
(Reading database ... 130135 files and directories currently installed.)
Preparing to replace mfcj410wlpr:i386 1.1.1-1 (using mfcj410wlpr-1.1.1-1.i386.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement mfcj410wlpr:i386 ...
Setting up mfcj410wlpr:i386 (1.1.1-1) ...

How can I get this driver to install? It worked on 32-bit.

I ran 64-bit for years on a 3.4GHz Pentium 4, it crapped out on me and now I use a small 32-bit AMD jobby some business gave to me. They gave me five boxes, the Pentium 4 jobbies are in storage, need a little part interchanging but I have no time for that, and besides, this little 2+ GHz AMD unit works just fine. I really don't see a need for 64-bit right now. Back in the day I used to run large processes and I guess the 64-bit OS was nice. But for average home use, there is no advantage from what I see with this unit I've been using for almost a year now.
To answer your question, install 32-bit Ubuntu.
A printer driver is just a text file that foomatic (or gutenprint) consults. It doesn't have an architecture. Somewhere in that .deb package is a file with the extension .ppd.gz and that's the bit you need. Get it out with an archive manager (fileroller?), find where the drivers live, and add it. On Fedora it would be in
/usr/share/foomatic/db/source/PPD/Brother/
and on OpenSUSE in
/usr/share/cups/model/manufacturer-PPDs/brother/
No luck with the PPD. The printer is wireless, but I think there is a cable that can connect to the printer. I was able to get the drivers to work in 64-bit Fedora 16, but can't in Ubuntu.
I've just downloaded the CUPS deb and looked inside it with fileroller. I found data.tar.gz and buried inside that was brmfcj410.ppd — that's the driver.
