print screen+gimp/screenshot program question

I tried to paste my print screen in GIMP but it doesn't have anything to paste. Is that because there's some limit in GIMP and how could I fix that?

Is there a program that takes screenshots and isn't ksnapshot I don't want 100s of MBs of useless libraries to take a screenshot.

You could always just take the snapshot with ksnapshot (that's what i do), and then just compress the images using either the GIMP or ImageMagick. You can apt-get/urpmi for both. If you get ImageMagick, for example, you can bulk-change the quality and size of all the images in a particular folder. Very handy, I find.

GIMP has built-in screenshot functionality. File > Acquire > Screenshot. Why not just use that?
