Preventing Ubuntu Upgrade or Update (after Appearance of Blue Screen and Loss of Terminal)

2015-12-17

Today when I turned on my Ubuntu 12.04 desktop, I was shocked to find a blue screen with all the panel icons shown as black boxes and the system would not open a terminal in response to a CTL+ALT+T keyboard command. Right-clicking the screen does not show 'open a terminal' option.

I haven't been able to fix the problem by restarting. In order to prevent a similar from happening in the future, I would like to know whether I can securely lock my Linux O.S. to its current version after re-installing it.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Wanna "freeze" the system?
Yes you can, simply disallow any future updates...but, it's dangerous. Regular updates are the backbone of the strength of Linux. There are security updates too...dont believe that your system, even when secure today, will be this secure tomorrow...
Perhaps it is a good idea to figure out WHAT happened and prevent this from happening again. Or, do a...system update because of a security problem in the "blue screen" one...

Melissa,

Thanks for your advice. Actually I've just unintentionally fixed my problem by booting up Ubuntu with its original live cd. I didn't need to re-install Ubuntu. Now I know what to do and won't panic.

I agree with your sound advice entirely and won't bother to lock up my O.S.

Glad you found the solution. And...the panic attacks? I still have 'em. I used to be a ***dows user/sufferer....I paniced all the time...
Eh, being over exposed to ***dows leaves a lifelong trauma I guess
Dont worry, a bit of panic is good...at times
Melissa
(happy to see you also marked this as solved)
