premission access problem in apache .
Hi all,
I would like explain the problem with the summary of what i have done, It would be of great help if someone can get this working.
1. I have installed apache at my home directory to run at port 6060. Assume (appadurai is the user name)
For eg /home/appadurai.
User and Group entries in httpd.conf is
User appadurai
Group apache
2. I have include scripts to run this as a service and it was working fine, if i am logged in as appadurai .
Now comming to the problem, I am getting following error if i access the document root specified in httpd.conf loggged as someother user (not appadurai)
You don't have permission to access /index.html on this server. Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request. .
I get the same error if i change the user entry to nobody in httpd.conf.
My requirement is i must be able to access the pages from browser iresspective of the user logged in.I hope someone could help me on this.
Thanks in advance.

Did you install apache in your home directory, or did you set your home directory as the doc-root ?
Document Root /home/app ?
Server Root /home/app ?
There is a very big difference between this...
Can you let me know? Maybe i can help you out.

Thank you for the reply,
I have installed apache in
/home/mydir.
Server Root in the httpd.conf is set to path where apache is installed (in my case : /home/mydir)
Doc root is set to some other path where i put my files which will be requested from the browser and served by web server.

Okay,
lets say as you said:
you installed apache in: /home/mydir
and you set your document root to /otherdir/htdocs
is the user appidurai able to browse to both directories ?
Thats the first thing you must check.
If you have the right permissions in both dirs, check de permissions on the html files itself?
Is the owner appadurai ?
Or is the group apache ?
Does the user or group has (at least) read access to the files?
Let me know, and i might be able to help you further...

Thanks once again for your reply, Your replies helps me to keep moving forward,
Replying to the questions,
"appadurai" has permission to access the directories where apache is installed and the document root location.
"appadurai" is the owner of both the directories and i am able to access both the directories logged in as "appadurai".
My question is , if any user can access the page specified in document root for the apache bundled with linux . Then why should
apache installed separately should fail.

It should not fail....
But this brings me to another question:
You have the apache that was bundled with Linux still installed?
And if so, how do you start your new apache?
Just to make sure that we are using the right one???
