your webserver, probably yes. (Did you select to install it?)
PHP, No Get it here: http://www.php.net/downloads.php
your default web root is: /var/www/html

Your index file by default can end with .htm or .html

If installed I should be able to start the service httpd and then set my browers to http://localhost right?

I went to su -
then typed
/sbin/service httpd start

I got: httpd: unrecognized service

How do I start the server? I looked in orielly but did not find any good docs on starting confing linux apache. if anyone knows a good article please post it.

If you install the new version of Mandrake 9.1 you can select to install PHP, SSL, MySQL and Perl modules for Apache2 during the install. A lot less of a pain. Getting PHP to work after the fact is a pain in my A$$.

oops, sorry, I jumped ahead ..

If you went to the "packages" and just seletec the webserver it will install it for you (with php), basically pain free (I assume it's what you did)

well I went to /etc/rc.d/init.d/httpd start
and got a no file found so I must not have apache installed.

I did not understand what you meant by selecting 'packages'. Was this an install from the CD? If so which? 3? Also do you know the package name. I looked through them but did not see anything similar.

Again thanks,
Jason

I am now installing the "Server" package from the disks. Does anyone know if that includes SQL or not?
