Powersave mode when swtiching user.....why??
 

Hello, I have a 64bit computer with SUSE 11 installed. When I try to switch an user the computer or monitors go to powersave mode. The only way to power it back on is to restart by pressing the button in the linux box. Any ideas why this happens and how to fix it? Thanks!

The machine is probably switching to a new X session when you switch users. As such there may be a short period when the monitor iz receiving no signal from the video card - this may prompt itto shut down. Have you tried to look at the settings of your monitor (hardware settings using the buttons on the display)? Also, does this happen when you switch to a console? Ctrl-Alrt-F1 (and Ctrl-Alrt-F7 or perhaps F8 to get back to X).

Nope it only happens when I swich users...I can change between init modes but cant switch user...

Press the "On" button on your monitor?

Have you tried just waiting a few moments for X to restart and the monitor to wake up?

It's a bad idea to power down your linux box by pressing the power button. Not all systems will shut down gracefully if you do this.

We need more details: Monitor model, make and how it is connected to your PC [what sort of cable - VGA, whatever, for a start. Links to the manufacturer's (PDF?) manual would also help us help you. What is your graphics card? What modules are you using to drive it?

Linux Box Suse 11.x (http://www.novell.com/products/opensuse/)
Driver: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470 (http://www.amd.com/us/products/noteb...400-specs.aspx) Output is only D-Port
Monitor: Dell 2009W (http://www.dell.com/us/en/dfh/monito...fp&cs=22&s=dfh) Connection via DVI
I used ati-config to configure my monitor, I had a big issue with this since I have a dual monitor screen now. Though I made it worked but sometines now display settings configuration can't be changed with ATI settings (this is not a big problem though).

I tried waiting for a long time but nothing happens, the computer also goes to powersave mode or stanby or something like that and when I press the button to turn on, it does not respond.

So, even when you turn the monitor back on, jiggle the mouse and press a key or two, nothing happens?

Exactly.....the computer seems to be turned off or something.....not even with Ctrl+Alt+1

Maybe X or the video driver in use is buggy? It sounds like X is crashing your system. Have you tried updating, or testing a different video driver (like vesa) to see if the problem persists?

yes..actually I have tow machines with the same specs

Are they both using the same distro?

Maybe try an Ubuntu Live CD or something to see if the problem exists there.
