Unhappy PostgreSQL Woes

Hi.
Can somebody help me on the following problem.
First off,I`m using KRUD-7.1 which is extremely stable.I have installed
Pronto (E-mail client) with no problems except a database is required and from the options given,I chose PostgreSQL.I installed all the required RPM`s but when I attempted to configure it by su postgres (as root),createuser etc,etc I obtained the following output:
psql:connect DBstart() --connect() failed
No such file or directory
Is the postmaster running locally and accepting connections on Unix socket `/tmp/.s.PGSQL.5432?
Createuser creation of user "jeff" failed.
I`ve checked the /tmp/ directory but there is no sign of PGSQL anywhere.
I`m a newbie,so any help would be gratefully appreciated
Many thanks,
jeff
