postgresql starting problem, conf file doesn't exist


I am trying to set up a postgresql database. Everything I do

service postgresql start

it shows me rh9 fails to start the service.

there are supposed to be two conf file under /var/lib/pgsql/data, but i haven't seen any on mine

any help will be greatly appreaciated
