Postgresql is giving me a VERY BAD time, help very much needed

Hello everyone. I'm using a RedHat Enterprise Linux version 3 box. I have installed every package available related to postgresql, and so far, the programa appears to be installed on the machine.

I cannot get postmaster to run. When i execute:

postmaster -i

or any other options, with postmaster, i get the following response:

postmaster does not know where to find the database system data.
You must specify the directory that contains the database system
either by specifying the -D invocation option or by setting the
PGDATA environment variable.

But, if i try to create a new directory, say /home/demosapec/pgsql/data, and use the -D option to bind it there, it says it doesn't find the file PG_VERSION on that directory.

I have tried:
echo $PGDATA <- no response
locate PG_VERSION <- no response

I cannot run the postmaster as root, and i'd rather not to, if this is the only option.

Could anyone point me into a helpful direction. I am quite lost at the moment, i don't know what i did wrong, but this is just not working.

Thanks everybody in advance.

Solved

I had to use initdb first to initialize the db. I leave this thread for everyone with same problems to read, but maybe forum admins decice to delete it. In any case, sorry for taking up space in the forum.
