Postgres Install Error

hi all,

i am trying to compile postgres 8.3.3
while configuring the following error comes up:

configure: error: readline library not found
If you have readline already installed, see config.log for details on the
failure. It is possible the compiler isn't looking in the proper directory.
Use --without-readline to disable readline support.
i have checked in synaptic that 'libreadline5' is installed. do i need to install another readline lib..?

You'll need the readline development package.
