Question postfix/spamassassin combo creates alot of processes.

I think I am close to having spamassassin setup to work with postfix as our mail gateway, but I am not quite there. I notice that as mail hits the server, it spawns alot of spamd, postfixfilter, and sendmail, processes. This is an older machine and its bogging under the load. Can anyone tell me if this is normal for spamassassin/postfix?
