postfix - smtp ok from squirrelmail, no good from thunderbird

hi all

almost have my mail server setup

i'm just having some final issues with sending messages using my smtp server
running on fc4 with postfix

i've looked at for assistance, but everything seems to be ok
i can telnet from localhost to port 25, and also from another server to port 25 on my server fine

and i can send mail from squirrelmail fine

my iptables look like this
-A INPUT -p tcp -m tcp --dport 993 -j ACCEPT
-A INPUT -p tcp -m tcp --dport 110 -j ACCEPT
-A INPUT -p tcp -m tcp --dport 25 -j ACCEPT
-A INPUT -p tcp -m tcp --dport 143 -j ACCEPT

# Localhost traffic
-A INPUT -i lo -j ACCEPT
smtp in thunderbird looks like
port 25
user (also tried just "user")

smtpd is running on the server, i get 220 responses when i telnet into port 25

any ideas?
