postfix smtp issue(s) (fedora core 4)

I just set up an old system in the back bedroom and using it for a server... apache is working fine and so is ftp but POSTFIX.. Yikes... what a nightmare.. man pages and google are like a cat chasing it's own tail... I'm getting nowhere but 'p'...ed off in a hurry.. :-( trying to send mail out to the internet..

Postfix is NOT rewriting any from: headers and all mail sent from starfleet.ss-enterprize.net have from=user@starfleet.localhost.localdomain which is always going to be rejected by the recipients mail server... I'd like from to be re-written to user@myvanitydomain.hn.org but... it just will not cooperate .... generic file isn't working with either hash or regexp table types and setting mydestination isn't working either...

Years ago, when I was using mandrake, I set up postfix and it worked fine.. all I had to do was set a couple of values in the main.cf file and off it went... But this version (which btw is 2.2.2) is giving me ONE BIG HEADACHE...

Solve this for me and I'll introduce you to .. ohhh... never mind... she's taken.. LOL...

TIA..

Any chance you could post your main.cf file?
Here's a portion of mine:
Code:
# POSTFIX SETTINGS
queue_directory = /var/spool/postfix
command_directory = /usr/sbin
daemon_directory = /usr/libexec/postfix
mail_owner = postfix
default_privs = nobody

# DOMAIN SETTINGS
myhostname = mail.my-domain.com
mydomain = my-domain.com

# SENDING MAIL
myorigin = $mydomain

# TRUST AND RELAY CONTROL
mynetworks = 192.168.X.X/28, 127.0.0.0/8, 127.0.0.1/8
Hope this helps.

well, my values are exactly the same except for domain stuff..
myhostname = starfleet.localhost.localdomain
mydomain = localhost.localdomain
myorigin = myvanityname.hn.org (which is supposed to replace the local stuff but isn't)
mynetworks = same as yours...

are there OTHER paramaters that have to be set in order for postfix to actually send mail from a server w/out a legitimate domain.tld to another server on the internet?? Believe me, I've tried everything I've run across but none of it works... :-(

have you tried netsat -an to make sure your server is listening on port 25? Also do you have a firewall that might be stopping the connection?

Connectivity isn't the problem... Postfix is leaving the from: header set to starfleet.localhost.localdomain instead of my vanity domain (with MX record) at example.hn.org so all the mail is being rejected by the recipients smtp server...

doesn't matter anyway... i've given up and now looking at other alternamtives (except sendmail)...
