Unhappy postfix send error 550

Hi guys,

I'm having a little trouble with bouncing messages on Postfix. When I send emails over my server I get messages such as:

Sep 18 10:27:37 FARMER postfix/smtp[7149]: 0B53347015: to=<james@atkin.co.uk>, relay=pop3.hiway.co.uk[195.12.1.134], delay=0, status=bounced (host pop3.hiway.co.uk[195.12.1.134] said: 550 <james@atkin.co.uk>, Recipient unknown)

Now I realise that 550 messsage is coming from the other server to tell me that it doesn't know who the user (james@atkin.co.uk) is, but the thing is this user DOES exist! When I send email to this user through a web mail account, it all goes ahead fine and I can pick up the message.

For this reason I think Postfix might be somehow sending a malformed username or something. The only thing I can think of that may have caused this is the change of my internal network addresses, which I updated in my main.cf file (changed mynetworks) and resolv.conf as I also got a new DNS address (just copied over from the one in /etc/ which I'd already updated).

Using Postfix 1.1.12 and Redhat 9.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Ok, so I tried to completely remove and reinstall Postfix, same error. Here's a copy of my main.cf:

queue_directory = /var/spool/postfix
command_directory = /usr/sbin
daemon_directory = /usr/libexec/postfix
mail_owner = postfix
myhostname = smtp.atkin.co.uk
myorigin = $myhostname
inet_interfaces = all
mynetworks_style = subnet
mynetworks = 192.168.0.0/28, 127.0.0.0/8
debug_peer_level = 2
debugger_command =
PATH=/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin
xxgdb $daemon_directory/$process_name $process_id & sleep 5
sendmail_path = /usr/sbin/sendmail.postfix
newaliases_path = /usr/bin/newaliases.postfix
mailq_path = /usr/bin/mailq.postfix
setgid_group = postdrop
manpage_directory = /usr/share/man
sample_directory = /usr/share/doc/postfix-1.1.12/samples
readme_directory = /usr/share/doc/postfix-1.1.12/README_FILES
alias_database = hash:/etc/postfix/aliases

all seems to be in order, can anyone point anything obviously wrong out to me? By the way this server is for sending mail only. It was working up until my (nat) isp changed it's network addresses to the same as mine and I had to change my internal addresses to 192.168s.

They did this because they changed their router (and, as I like to think, to annoy me). Could this be something to do with the problem? I didn't think SMTP needed to use ports other than # 25 (the new router seems to have problems with forwarding non conventional ports). Anyone got any ideas about what I could do next?

Talking

Ah ha! Figured it out! A few telnets to different mail servers revealed that the new "router" is intercepting all traffic on port 25 and directing it to my ISP's mail server *gggrrrrr* Sometimes you wish that these people would just communicate every now and then
