Postfix local delivery to users not in passwd file

I am wondering if it is possible to have a dovecot style "passdb/userdb" file in postfix, containing a list of local users for mail delivery? I have looked at local_recipient_maps, and it seems that it would be the closest thing to what I am trying to do, but I have not been able to drudge up enough information to be conclusive. What I really want to do is have a separate passwd file for postfix, and not have to modify the real passwd file.

Thanks!

You want virtual users.

Take a look at the VIRTUAL_README in the postfix docs.

Thanks, I have extensively tested the virtual users configuration, which from all accounts requires you to change the uid/gid for all the users to a static uid/gid. I cannot change the uid/gid for the user's home directories at this point, so if virtual hosting can accomplish this that would be helpful. So far I have not been able to get virtual hosting to work this way.

Difficult to advise when modifying an existing system rather than creating a new one, but whenever I've used virtual users I have had a single central mailstore, e.g. /var/vmail/<user>/Maildir rather than using users home directories. Then postfix writes into it and dovecot reads out of it.

I am going to look at doing dovecot lmtp and have postfix just send the messages to dovecot for local delivery. Eventually we want to use virtual hosting, but we inherited a very old mail system with a poorly designed hosting model.
