Postfix configuration help.
I could really use some help with postfix. I have been scouring the web for help files and tutorials and have had no real luck. I am running mandrake 10, which came with postfix loaded on the install. I installed ipop3 and that appears to be working. I can telnet to the server on port 110, however I get a connection refused error when I try port 25. I can telnet from the linux machine to itself by using telent localhost 25. Here is a list of my concerns.
Should I have named this machine something other than the default localhost? I have a domain registered pointing to the box. What should my /etc/hosts file look like? It looks something like:
127.0.0.1 localhost
Using the firewall GUI in mandrake 10 I have mail server selected as a port to open, it has worked with every other server including the pop so i have no reason to believe the firewall is causing the error. Is there a way to get the OS to list all the open ports to verify this?
I am using webmin to help configure some of this stuff as well.
Let me know what else to post to help you figure this out. Thanks.
Mike

It sounds like postfix is not running.
check with this command
netstat -lt |grep smtp
tcp 0 0 zeus.dcphillips.net:smtp *:* LISTEN
If that's ok try to telnet in from the mailserver machine itself.
Postfix may ot be configured to listen on all interfaces if it works locally only
/var/log/maillog and /var/log/messages should tell you if there is any error.

Hey thanks for the help. I verfied that postfix was running, however in the log file for the mail server I saw that the aliases database was not being opened. Turns out the main.cf file was pointing to the wrong location. Kind of weird that it was wrong since it was a default install from the mandrake setup. I am now able to telnet into the server and type in some commands manually. I will try with the clients at a later date, but I feel that the battle is won!! Thanks again. I will reply to this thread if something else pops up.

Hey, so where did you find that yours was pointing to the wrong place and where did you change it?

If your having a problem with postfix starting check the log files. You can also look at the main.cf and confirm that all of the filenames that are written in the file are correct by checking to see that the files exist in the path given.

I think I also had to make sure the process was run under a user that had the correct privaledge to access the files. Aother than that, as mentioned by David, check the log file to see what errors occur while starting.
