I tried as you susggested but got the same complaint. I'm pretty sure the defattr already specify the owner as IIU which is what I want.

Sorry... just realised I was drunk and told you the opposite meaning for the '%dir' directive. If you just list the name of the directory, it selects the directory an all files recursively, using the %dir directive only selects the directory with none of the contents.
