Portage needs update... uhhh how?

Hey All!

Well, I am a newbie to Linux Gentoo, and I am about midway through the install process. On the command line, I type 'emerge sync' and then it downloads a whole bunch of files to my Gentoo installation. After it is done downloading, it gives me a reminder message saying 'There is an update available for Portage. We _highly_ recommend updating Portage now before updating your packages.'

My question is this: how do I update Portage (from the command line) and then after that how do I update my packages further (also from the comand line).

I'm sure the answer is very simple... sorry for my newbness
