Exclamation port25 and 110 send a service not found message(RH9)

I am tring to setup a Redhat 9 mail server at home. I have Sendmail installed. When I try to telnet to port 25 or 110 I get an error message about the service not being available. What entries need to be placed in the xinetd and xinetd.conf to get the ports to listen. The services show they are started.

Thx. in advance

sendmail's default config does not accept external connections - you've edited /etc/mail/sendmail.mc, right? and run m4 on it?

Assuming you've config'd sendmail:
1) are you filtering using iptables? See if you have rules blocking these ports
2) are you sure sendmail's running? netstat -l (that's an "L")
3) can you send mail from inside the net to external folks? (this isn't a solution, but might identify the real problem)
