I don't IM under linux. I use linux for servers and stuff that I have to use linux for. Windows is my desktop OS. I use trillian pro. It is reasonably refined, looks prettier, and has the most functional UI that I have yet come upon.
Gaim under X under emergency needs.

You guys that use gaim, how have you got the file transfers to work. In my windows os, trillian file transfers work fine. Do I need to open router ports or what to get gaim file transfer to work? I currently have a linksys wireless router.

Yahoo messenger both in winXP and Slack
Although the linux version of Yahoo M looks like the old YM and doesn't support some of the eye candy that the win version does
Gaim occasionally

i already answered this above, but i now use Psi because it's faster than my previous answer (gaim), and has better support for Jabber. Also, but not the main reason I switched was the occassional seg fault of gaim, and just plain boredom. And my last reason for the switch is because it's modeled after the old ICQ client...the best design in IM history You should give it a try...

For voice and WebCam support for yahoo messenger you can try gyach :
1. Download http://www.politicalcrossfire.com/te...nstall.tar.bz2 , and save it to your home directory (important!).
2. Run these commands in the terminal, in sequential order:
Code:
tar -xjf gyach-install.tar.bz2
cd gyach
sudo ./install

I'm a fellow newb. I like the layout of kopete though I've found it to be quite tempermental and runs a lot of processes like Axion said. Gaim is pretty cool and has always been there for me in the clinch.

I've always used GAIM for GUI.
But as for whoever said NAIM.... YUCK. Try Pork if you want a good ncurses based AIM client, it beats out NAIM hands down. I've almost switched to it solely in place of GAIM before!
