cyrus is my fav. it is quite easey to setup, and there are a lot of manuals out there which are quite helpful.

An alternative is dovecot. I've used cyrus-imap before, and I don't think there is a lot of difference betwen the two in terms of ease of configuration. Note that dovecot can serve both imap and pop, whereas I think that cyrus needs separate servers. I could be mistaken there though.

Dovecot works pretty much out of the box with some pretty obvious changes to the config file.

start of with installing dovecot...

you then usually have very good example config files and a lot of info in /usr/share/doc

and have a google for 'dovecot howto' and check out dovecots website....

that at least is a good start :-)

xrado, I don't know quite how huch you know about email, but you need an MTA between fetchmail and dovecot. Have a look at the description on the first page of

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...d.php?t=467257

if you don't understand what I mean.

Otherwise, which MTA are you using.

hi, i know a little about email

i installed postfix for MTA

..this is what i did till now:

#.fetchmailrc
poll "pop.someserve.com"
protocol pop3
username "username"
password "pass"
mimedecode
mda "/usr/bin/procmail -d %s"

#.procmailrc
HOME=/home/xrado # where is our homedir
DEFAULT=$HOME/Maildir # what is the default place to store mail
LOGFILE=$HOME/.procmaillog # keep a log

# telnet localhost 25
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to localhost.
Escape character is '^]'.
220 shramba ESMTP Postfix

#telnet localhost imap
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to localhost.
Escape character is '^]'.
* OK dovecot ready.

..i polled the mail in to maildir with fatchmail (there are files in ~Maildir), but when i connect to imap with thunderbird ..it ask me for the password .. thats ok ..but there is no mail in inbox

whats missing?

Do you have another email client you can try - say evolution?

Do the files in ~/.Maildir/new look like emails to you (cat one)?

Note the line

Jul 28 11:22:34 shramba postfix/postfix-script: warning: My hostname shramba is not a fully qualified name - set myhostname or mydomain in /etc/postfix/main.cf

Fix this, it seems to be causing problems for postfix (you can probably set myhostname to shramba.example.com

It looks like postfix isn't delivering mail to the maildir, but it looks like postfix isn't running properly given the message above

Try your fetchmail without the mda line - you don't need it as fetchmail will dliver to port 25 to postfix.

send youself an email with

# mail -s test <yourusername>

you will need to hit <ctrl> d a couple of times and see if it's delivered.

What's in ~/.Maildir/new and ~/Maildir/cur ?
