Polish characters missing in Java apps

Just like i said in the subject - I've got problems with some letters while using Java programs, such as jedit; when I stroke appropriate combination of keys to get one of Polish letters (for example: alt + a) a small square appears instead; but when I cut & paste such a letter everything is OK; in other, non-Java applications also everything seems fine;

I assume, that the problem is somehow connected with keyboard or Java configuration rather than with font, but I can't figure it out;

thanks in advance!

PS. I've posted this also at Slackware forum a few days ago, but I guess this forum is better for that kind of problem ...
