Pointer freezes everything on Ubuntu 9.10 DELL Latitude E6510

Partitioned Hard Disk I set up Ubuntu 9.10 (10.4 would hang before installation).

Computer works for a few minutes and then freezes (pointer and the rest: Ctrl Back, Ctrl Del, Ctrl f2 do not respond).

The graphics card is Intel® HD Graphics
RAM 8Gb
HD 500Gb
LED Display (1920 x 1080) (perhaps too much?)

It seems a memory problem: testing memory on windows is ok. On Linux the memory test declare "too small lower memory". No problems with windows (I tried also wubi, independently, but it hangs immediately going blank after upgrading packages). Ubuntu 9.10 works perfectly on my older pc.

Very strange?? unusable, any suggestions? Thank you

8 Giga bytes of RAM too low? I think is too HIGH and that Linux gets confused and sees '0'. Only one of my PC's has more than 1/2 GB of memory.

If in doubt, run MemCheck86. Try it wit Slax. That's fairly failsafe.

The emergency keys are not Ctrl-Del but Alt-Ctrl-Del and Alt-Ctrl-Bkspace.

The emergency exit to try is:

Press and KEEP DEPRESSED Alt-Ctrl-PrtScreen
Press and release 'S'
Press and release 'U'
Press and release 'B'

thank you: Ctrl-Alt-Del etc. do not work; Alt-Ctrl-PrtScreen SUB
also does not.

The pc is frozen. I suspect it goes into hibernation and remains there.
Unusable. The memory is 8 Gb RAM, as "top" recognizes. The OS is a 64 bit ubuntu 9.10 OS.

Can you see what is this problem? (is it possible that the xorg.conf files are incorrect: I cannot locate them as the last time (pre-ubuntu times) I looked at them they were called something like XF86Config.

ubuntu+freeze

I have finally succeeded installing ubuntu 9-10: I had also to disable acpi during installation. Also it seems that there is a
problem with the package xorg (at least if I install it now the display stops working: but I can at least get a rescue prompt and uninstall it).

So I would consider this empirically solved (but not understood).
