Please Help On Installation Instructions

I am new to linux and the one thing that is keeping me from switching is installing programs. I would like to have step by step instructions on how to install files in Linux. Windows is easy as can be on installations and I am having no luck in Linux. I am running Ubuntu 5.10.

Applications can be installed from packages or from source code - it depends on personal preference and your distribution. Is there a problem with a particular application that you're having?

Please tell an example of a program that you would like to install.

As mentioned, there are several ways to install programs. The default way to install a program on a desktop system is just a few mouse clicks.
