Playing music from an NTFS partition in linux

Hi, this is my first post so if it's in the wrong place or anything let me know.

I have all my music on an NTSF partition and would like to be able to play it in linux. The partition is mounted correctly and i can access the files no problem. The problem is that Amorak and a few other players i have tried don't play it, saying that i can only play local media.

The only program i have found so far that can access the tunes on the NTFS partition is mplayer, which isn't ideal for music. There is no media library etc.

Can i get Amorak or a similar music program to access the partition? I just want a music library.

as long as your kernel has ntfs read support mount the partition you can use any media player.

Well that is not the case with this copy of SUSE 9.3:

Amorak tells me i can only read local files, Juk gives me no message at all, it just doesn't play files from NTFS, and mplayer plays the files fine. I don't understand the inconsistency.

Can you try moving one or more files into one of your Linux directories---see if they will play from there?

I don't know if this is relevant, but you may want to consider setting up a FAT32 partition for all of you data. This is maybe the easiest way to share files between Linux and Windows.

upgrade to SuSE 10.0 and then get the update package, making sure to get all the media updates. Then amaroK will play mp3 from NTFS. Or you could wait til 10.1 comes out and do it then. Currently 9.3 doesn't have mp3 support and neither does 10.0 OSS version at first until you get the update.

download and install XMMS.

My entire iTunes library from my old powerbook is sitting on an external NTFS drive. I populate my playlist off that drive every single day without problem.

Maybe when you mount the NTFS drive "users" do not have access?

Try loading the files in a player as "root". See if the problem persists.

I have a dual boot system with XP on one hard drive and Kubuntu on the other drive. I used to have some music on a NTFS partion located on the first drive. I have my NTFS mounted by /etc/fstab in read-only and I set them up in amarok configuration (Configuration/collection: /mnt/Win...).

Just check the boxes and it should do the trick
