Resources for beginners

I was trying to get XMMS to work and then I found audacious, which works fine.... can't I delete this?

I wish there was a resource-central, distribution-neutral place with the latest information from multiple places pointed out, grouped, clarified, organized, etc. I suppose it would be something like wikis, but simpler-- just like taking all the papers on the desk and organizing them with post-its instead of trying to rewrite them, i.e., instead of having to spend a lot of time searching the net and draining the eyeballs sifting through irrelevant information for the tiny bits that may be of help.

this site wanted my credit card so I can not test it.

But my Opera browser has a plugin for mp3.

And I use Amarok to play mp3 or mplayer. Either can play my usb mp3 player but amarok handles the playlist better.
