to give everyone read-write access.
There is (on redhat at least) a group called 'disk' that you can make yourself part of, then allow the disk group to have read access, and that should sort it too.
I'm too lazy, so I just went for the 777 method. There may or may not be security risks with that. I suppose if your box was compromised, an attacker could blank your cd-rw s. Hmm...
