I have a strange problem here. I had configured and exported PKG_CONFIG_PATH on my pc and I am using `pkg-config --cflags --libs gtk+-2.0` for compiling my code.
Everything worked fine untill I had to add libgnomecanvas path to the existing PKG_CONFIG_PATH. So I decided to check the original PKG_CONFIG_PATH [a sanity check] before I modify it. But I cannot find the existing PKG_CONFIG_PATH in env & echo $PKG_CONFIG_PATH returns NULL. But strangely the code compiles
So where is the PKG_CONFIG_PATH I had set?

unless you had set your PKG_CONFIG_PATH to be reset by a startup script, you lose it any time you log out (along with all of your environment variables). You have to add it to a script (like ~/.cshrc or ~/.bashrc or ~/.bash_profile or ~/.profile - see documentation on the shell you are using and test it well) that is run when you startup for it to be in effect in your next session.

Also, you need to be sure to export any variables you set, which you mentioned already so I think you're ok in that regard.
