Ping works but still route not found

Hi,

any expert can please tell me what this error means

Code:
[root@sumit root]# nc -v 192.168.1.190 110
192.168.1.190: inverse host lookup failed: Unknown host
(UNKNOWN) [192.168.1.190] 110 (pop3) : No route to host
[root@sumit root]# ping 192.168.1.190
PING 192.168.1.190 (192.168.1.190) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 192.168.1.190: icmp_seq=0 ttl=64 time=0.308 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.1.190: icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.231 ms
when I can ping the same IP why cannot it find any route to the Pop3 server on port 110 ?

Thanks

First, I apologize for not being able to answer your question.

I am curious what this "nc" command is. I don't see it in /usr/bin or /usr/sbin, I don't see it in Yast, I don't see it in "Linux in a Nutshell". Can you tell me what it is?

Hi,

Sorry from my side for late reply

nc stands for NetCat, its a network utility, that allow you establish tcp /ip connection with any machine with its IP on any port, My CentOs come with default nc in it, but if you don't find please google netcat and you find its src to complie

but as Linux Programmer its the best utility to check network connection, and if used properly can stand with CURL or wget for you even.

ok, yes i have netcat. thanks.

what happens when you do this:
/usr/sbin/rpcinfo -p 192.168.0.190

also, i've read of a utility called sping, which allows you to specify a port to ping
maybe you can find that.
