PING failure to restore large NTFS partition

Trying to use PING 3.02 to restore 275 GB of data in a 900 GB partition. Goes well until 232GB, then everything just freezes. Happened with two different destination disks. Data is from a Win7 system.

I've used and loved PING for years, maybe it can't handle big disks that are common today?

------------------------- edit ----------------------------------------------------------------------

After much wasted time, determined PC has some subtle hardware defect causing the crashes. It crashed
with dd command, Clonezilla, as well as PING. A different PC worked OK.

Perhaps ddrescue?

It should ignore I/O errors if the hardware is failing.

Your edit says you solved the problem, so this might be helpful for future reference.

A little more background, this wasn't trying to restore a disk, it was attempting to clone a disk for someone else as a backup. 1TB to 1TB.

Initially tried 'dd', but that would panic the system. Tried new distros, old distros, different block sizes, same result. Tried another target disk on the theory it was bad.

Then I tried PING, which would freeze when about 85% done. Also tried Clonezilla, same results.

Moving to a different PC to do the work made everything fine. So I'm quite confident it was some subtle hardware issue. The bad PC remains in normal use, has no obvious problem until trying to copy huge amounts of data.
