I recently upgraded my Pidgin messenger to version 2.5.8. The problem now is that it will not connect to MSN or Yahoo. Before the upgrade it would only have problems with Yahoo due to their server upgrades, but now I am having trouble with msn as well. I have read through all the troubleshooting and FAQ pages at the Pidgin website and could not find anything about trouble connecting to MSN - also tried a google search. Strangely I am able to log on to AIM, though.
Sorry, the distro is PC Linux (PCLinuxOS release 2007 for i586, Kernel 2.6.18.8.tex5 on an i686 / \l).
The only error messages I get are: "Windows Live ID authentication: Unable to connect". And on yahoo I get: "Unable to connect to login.yahoo.com: SSL Handshake Failed"
I used Synaptic Package Manager to upgrade to the newer Pidgin version, it showed a list of dependencies that would be changed accordingly so I just assumed it was all taken care of. I may take okcomputer44's advice and just reinstall the whole thing. But I am worried I will lose the messenger conversation logs if I uninstall Pidgin. Is this the case? And where are the log files stored on my distro?
Ok, this is what the settings are on each account:
Server: messenger.hotmail.com
Port: 1863
HTTP method server: gateway.messenger.hotmail.com
Proxy type: use global proxy settings
On my yahoo it is:
Pager server: scsa.msg.yahoo.com
Japan pager server: cs.yahoo.co.jp
Pager port: 5050
Encoding: ISO-8859-1
Proxy type: use global proxy settings
I'm really not sure what to do, so any advice or suggestions would be much appreciated. If I don't figure this out I will just have to forget about Pidgin and find another messenger.
I was having trouble with pidgin and Yahoo when I had pidgin 2.5.7, but my problems vanished with 2.5.8. IIRC, I did change a yahoo server address to the IP address because I read that the problem was a DNS problem after the last Yahoo server upgrade.
Presently I am using these options:
Pager Server: 68.180.217.8
Pager Port: 5050
File Trnasfer Server: filetransfer.msg.yahoo.com
File Transfer Port: 80
Chat room locale: US
Encoding ISO-8859-1
No Proxy
I don't have a firewall - one of the great things about Linux, I don't really need one . I tried to change the proxy settings to 'No Proxy', still no change. I changed the yahoo server address to the IP address, but it didn't work. I was having trouble with yahoo before I upgraded to 2.5.8, but now I am suddenly having trouble with msn as well.
I uninstalled and reinstalled Pidgin using Synaptic, maybe this isn't good enough. I tried to do it with the commands I got here in the thread from okcomputer44 (yum remove pidgin, yum install pidgin) in one of the terminals but it didn't work. Any idea how I can uninstall pidgin in PC Linux (PCLinuxOS release 2007 for i586, Kernel 2.6.18.8.tex5 on an i686 / \l) from a terminal? Also: will this be any different from using Synaptic to do it for me?
Well first of all I'm not sure how to configure a firewall for Linux, and second of all I was under the impression that Linux wasn't really vulnerable to viruses and malware.
