Picture Viewer for Linux
 

Anyone know of a good pic viewer for Linux? I've been using ACDSee for Windows and that program is great. Just go to the folder and view one pic and start hitting page down for the next shot as fast as you want.
Is there anything similar for Linux? I was using Eye of Gnome and Gimp that came with Mandrake 9.1 but that only seems to open one pic at a time. I just need a fast viewer like ACDSee.
Any help would be appreciated.

I've never used ACDSee so I'm not sure which Linux program on the list would match the features you want.

GQView is an excellent program - it does thumbnails, slideshows, and will let you scroll thru pics in a directory, acdsee-style.

good deal...I'll give it a try. I installed XnView and it works like I want it to except it has this little small window in between images that shows it loading. Too fast to read but enough to get on the nerves when flipping though them fast.

Trying to install GQView and it states an error ...

[root@localhost downloads]# rpm -i gqview-1.2.2-1.i386.rpm
error: failed dependencies:
libpng.so.2 is needed by gqview-1.2.2-1

You need libpng

apparently you need to install the libpng library - you can find many places online to download it.

HERE is one site that may help (but I don't know much about Mandrake, so there may be better sites for your distro)

also, try looking into APT to make dependency problems easier to handle....

Oh yea...GQView is much, much, much better. It's exactly what I was looking for and it looks great! Many thanks on the head up on this program and all the installation help. I'm slowly but surely getting the hang of Linux and loving it!!

ok gqview is almost like acdsee, except u can't go thru compressed files such as zips. i looked thru the list and can't really tell if any of those can do that. does anyone kno of any program that will let u get inside of zips without having to uncompress first? thanks

Do any of these show the pic in a new window? I couldn't stand ACDsee because of trying to get it to open a new window with every new pic I try to view. With my 3D stuff I often try to have several simular textures open at the same time so I can view them all full size and side by side.

Thumbs plus is the best in my opinion. Haven't found a good one in Linux yet, though I haven't found a good 3D app either.

Prophet, when I use ACDSee by double-clicking on the image, I get it so that you can scan with the same window, using the next & previous buttons. It might just be when you open the whole program, instead of ACDSee's picture viewer/slideshow program that you experience that, I wouldn't know because I don't do that, I just double-click on the file from Explorer in Windows.

P.S. I love the search function on forums, it saved me from the hassel of making a new thread for this 8^D

Dear All,

I am pretty frustrated. I *WANT* to say goodbye to Windows. But for picture organizing there is no substitute yet for ACDSee. Despite of the umpteen statements being made that program XXX is a ACDSee clone.

Yeah, all programs show thumbnails and allow you to delete files. You can even rename files, ONE-BY-ONE.

I do a lot of model photography, that means shooting hundreds of pics in sequential mode, landscape and portrait.

At the end of the day I want to:
1. Select all the portrait files and rotate them, all at once to the correct orientation
2. Batch rename all files, using auto-numbering and a template, Like:
"rename all selected file to Michelle_Feb_2004-###.jpg" where ### is the sequence number, so Michelle_Feb_2004-001.jpg Michelle_Feb_2004-002

Both you do not want to do on a one-by-one basis, or do you?
Cool, I have found NO Linux program to do this for me, including GQView or Compupic. I appreciate all efforts being made, but all of them are still a far way from home.

Apparently I am the only user doing professional photography under Linux?? Do I have to stick to Windoze?

And yes, I do want to pay for such a program.
