picture is slower than sound in mplayer

i've installed mplayer from source files. in addition to it i've installed XviD codec. well everything seems to work fine, but in some (some, not all!) movies sound is faster than picture? why is that so? what should i do?

SciYro 12-13-2003 03:14 PM

play it in a difrent player or opersting system if possible it could jsut be the movies, but it ould also be that theres a lag problem, try playing it without any other programs runing

One other thing I found is use the divx4linux package. It seems to not suffer from the lag problem the xvid does. Just an observation though.

jogurt666 12-14-2003 03:23 AM

divx didn't help either. but when i play that file in non-gui mode and run mplayer through a command '$ mplayer' on that certain file, it shows that my PC is too slow. well it maybe isn't the fastest one available, but it is fast enough to play video files i've got the following hardware configuration:

*CPU Athlon XP 1700+
*512MB SDRAM
*GeForce FX 5200 128MB SDRAM

well i guess it should play everything correctly, shouldn't it?

PDR60 12-14-2003 03:28 AM

thats plenty fast enough. I play videos without any problems on my 500MHz dual celeron. Your box should be working fine. Have you tried another file???

jogurt666 12-14-2003 04:48 AM

yeah other files seem do be working fine. it is written that the one i wanna play was encoded using XviD. but even XviD didn't help.

Then something is wrong with the file.
Take a look at mplayer's documentation. There may be some options to manually
synchronize sound and picture. I know there are some options to synchronize subtitles
and picture, but i'm not sure about the former.
You could do everyone a favor and email a request to mplayer's authors to include
this option into next version, if not already.

You can adjust the audio delay by pressing the + or - key.

From the mplayer man page:
Code:

+ and -            adjust audio delay by +/- 0.1 second
