Picking a file manager

HI I use fvwm for my window manager. But I would like to get a GUI for file management onto my system and I'm not sure what is out there. What gui file managers are there in the world that do not require me to compile KDE or Gnome?

Try Thunar (and XFCE if you like it )

xfe is a popular lightweight file manager, that uses neither QT nor Gtk libraries.

Those are nice. The xfe looks really good and appears to be an independent solution.

Thanks.

emelfm2 has no Gnome, KDE or Xfce dependencies, only Gtk+ >= 2.6.

PCMan FM is a popular lightweight gui file manager with many features. I don't use it much, but looks to be thunar with tab support.

It looks similar but isn't really. It doesn't support custom actions so isn't nearly as extensible as Thunar.

Try rox-filer, it is lightweight, still supports thumbnails, is highly extensible:

If you don't plan on installing xfce, don't bother with Thunar.
