Picasa for Linux - if you want them to make a Linux version, read this
 

As I was helping a friend find some useful free applications for their Windows box, I turned them on to Picasa, which was "acquired by Google".

I noticed there wasn't a Linux version for download, so I popped into the Picasa forums to see if I could find any info on a Linux version. What I found was scattered threads with posts from people wanting a Linux version. Then I came across a few posts in some of these threads from a user by the name of "gunnarmarkc" who has the title of "Site Admin" who said: "We are counting all of these requests so keep them coming." because "A Linux version is being considered."

Picasa seems to be a nifty little free program for Windows, and if they're counting posts from people wanting a Linux version, then I suggest everyone here who is interested in this possibility please post on the Picasa forums in a Linux thread stating that you want your vote to be counted for a Linux version of Picasa to be made. It appears that anyone can post anonymously but it may make more of an impression if people registered for free on their forums to post with an account. I don't know if it matters, and I posted my request anonymously just assuming that my anonymous vote was counted.

Picasa has a slick interface and some cool features. I'd love a Linux version of Picasa (I'm not interested in running WINE with the Windows version) and I encourage everyone here that finds this program interesting to put in your vote to be counted. :)

To add to this thread here, has anyone used Picasa for Windows and have any comments to share about it? Any experiences with it pro/con? Would a Linux port of Picasa interest you?

Yes, I have tried Picasa .. it's quiet new, has some excellent ideas, great capabilities but sucks as Bill Gates ghost went into programmers brains ..

1. IT Auto scans your harddisk(s) and ANY darned jpeg/mpeg it can find .. it wants to own it . .. I call it MiSFiT Syndrome. This include every damn icon your machine has ...
- this is BAD ..
2. It does have a way of cataloging things as it finds them .. by date, it's very helpful
HOWEVER if you ever ask to view with one of the "prefrences" . . i.e. name or date etc. .. you can't GET back to what your original organization was .. this is major suck
3. It has the "print" service but DOESNT mention anywhere .. on the web site of the product doc's .. who's providing it, what it will cost etc. etc., may be the idea is that you click on it like those spyware ad's and we will lead you to salvation .. SUCKY

If you can live with problems like this and if you want to use it only as a way to organize pictures (and not get fancy with it) .. i think it has probably one of the best ui's and look for it. Plus it's free .. so that's nice.

In all, I would say they need to fix some of these issues before linux users end up raising the pricing of ammonia cleaners by throwing up on their keyboards and screen .. but surely some folks would be able to use it as it is and version will be helpful.

Not quite true: You can restrict it to just searching the My Documents folder, which is where most people keep their stuff anyhow. I'd definitely be interested in a Linux version, especially since MS seems to be scared to death of Google already :D

Ballmer's latest FUD about Google shows how much of a threat they consider them to be.

It wouldn't surprise me one bit if Google came out with a WebTV-like system based on Linux/Firefox. That'd really make Gates wet his pants! Here's hoping :D
