Phpmyadmin

I am having trouble loading phpmyadmin. The instructions I am finding on the net are not good or leave alot of important steps out. I have unzipped phpmyadmin and moved the folder to my document root which is /var/www/html and that is all so far. I have renamed it to phpmyadmin from phpmyadmin_0.2.languages..you get the picture.I need to be able to open this and administer the mysql database so I know I am going to have to edit some files. This is where my problems begin. Is there anyone out there with the correct steps for istalling this. The version of phpmyadmin I downloaded is 2.11.9.

Thanks
